Climbing The Skye Hills

The stunning Inner Hebrides Isle of Skye is an amazingly popular vacation destination. Commonly associated with older tourists Skye is renowned the world over for it's most dramatic landscape and the most clearly seen feature is the impressive sight of the Black Cuillins.

The Black Cuillins are a ridge of mountains which have rocks from all 3 periods of geology; Jurassic, Cretaceous and Triassic, making the mountains of great interest to both geologists and folk hunting for fossils plus mountain climbers, hikers, ramblers, hill-walkers.

The summits of Sgurr nan Gillean and Am Basteir supply the finest vistas. Skye's easiest munro summit to conquer (a munro is a Scottish mountain which is greater than 3,000 ft (914.4 m)) is Bruach na Frithe. The most difficult is Basteir Tooth. Sgurr Beag is easy climb also however you may find Sgurr Na h-Uarma a more moderate rockclimb.

The vast majority of mountaineers and hill walkers embark from Sligachan because it is approximately 3km from there to the Cuillins.

Mountain Safety

Sadly, each year, far too many hill walkers and hikers (and a small number of seasoned mountaineers) discover themselves in  difficulty. The weather on the Isle of Skye can change incredibly quickly, one minute the sun is shining in a clear sky and the next you are diving for cover from an oncoming storm.

One thing which is extremely important to do, is to be aware of the local weather forecast. The information is displayed at Tourist Information Centres across the Isle of Skye. These are found at the following places: the car park in Broadford, Bayfield Road in Portree and 2 Lochside in Dunvegan.

The Tourist Information Centres print a handy pamphlet about safety procedures to take when in the Cuillins which is definitely worth completing. It is very easy to spot because it is very brightly coloured. When you have filled in all the boxes on the form leave it with a person who is responsible who isn't going with you.
