Stay Busy Or Begin Rusting
Somebody famous once said that we don't stop playing because we get older but rather, we get older because we stop playing. This can be carried over to the need for most people to stay busy on either a physical or mental level, for the most part. Sitting around and brooding about regrets just illustrates the fact that it's better to stay busy or begin rusting, for most people.
Now, 'rusting' isn't technically what people do when they become inactive, though there is certainly an appreciable amount of oxidative damage that can occur that resembles what happens to metal that rusts. If that isn't enough to begin to motivate a person to try to stay busy, it's fairly difficult to figure out what else could, by the way. At any rate, the point is to get people to stay active.
One effective way to stay busy at least in a mental fashion is to consider what it might take to make money online. Certainly, the activity needs to be legal and legitimate and it also needs to be involved. When done the right way, in fact, it can really actually begin to not only bring income in but also improve mental acuity and even desire to do certain other physical things.
All of this is more about the point of people keeping the focus on moving and not, ever, stopping. This doesn't mean literally, because everybody needs rest, but the famous picture Satchel Paige, who probably pitched a major-league game while he was in his 50s or 60s, observed that he never looked behind him because he didn't want to know who was trying to catch up to him. That's a good philosophy to have.
Another effective way to occupy and engage the mind along with the body, and certain ways, is head over to the music store and pick out an instrument and learn to play it. Something like an Alvarez acoustic guitar can work well, and it's a way to develop hand-eye coordination, to boot. This very useful instrument will deliver many hours of enjoyment, if it's given the chance to do so.
Another useful activity to do on occasion is to just plain get the house uncluttered and free of junk. Maybe that old black helmet, that once belonged to an equally black motorcycle which was sold off long ago, can be stored away, thrown away or sold off. Certainly, leaving it laying under the dining room table for yet another decade isn't the way to go.
It's very important for people to understand that they don't have to decline, at least mentally. It's a fact that physical skills declined to the point where one will never be a superstar pro athlete any longer, but that doesn't mean that anyone — even those in their 90s — should accept the inevitable rocking chair. In fact, refuse that rocking chair and stay busy to stave off decline.
